What Happens at an Appointment for a Hearing Test?
After spending a some time getting to know you, reviewing your medical history, the hearing problems you are experiencing, and checking for ear wax, we will place you in a sound treated room. After giving you instructions, we will place headphones on you and present a series of beeps at different frequencies and loudness. You will be asked to respond to the beeps by pushing a button, or some other signal, to let us know you heard the beep. Next, we will place another apparatus, called a bone oscillator, behind your ear. You will again respond to a series of beeps. After this, we will speak to you through the headphones to determine the softest level you can understand words. Then, we will find a comfortable sound level to present a series of words that you will repeat back as best as possible.
There are two main things audiologists evaluate when they test hearing. The level at which you begin to hear sound and your ability to understand speech. The worse your understanding becomes, the harder it will be for you to do well with hearing aids, which is probably the most important reason to get help early and not wait.
After your hearing test, we will discuss the results and make recommendations as to what hearing aids will work best for you based on your hearing loss, finances, and lifestyle considerations. We want you to feel confident about your decision, so please feel free to ask any questions. If you decide to order hearing aids, we will take measurements of your ear shape and order your hearing aids.
